I designed Sanshi for him in 2021: an alphabet, A to Z, with the look of Japanese katakana, yet still highly legible. The name is a play on words. In Japanese, san shi is \"three, four\": San for my studio, Number 3, and Shi for Shirahama. I wanted a typeface that carried the same collision: the spiked lettering of gothic blackletter, rebuilt with the hard, mechanical precision of industry. Each letter is rigid and angular, with sections cut out as if redacted, leaving disjointed negative spaces. Nine centuries of blackletter, rewired. The cover art shows a figure in a flowing red robe, riding a skeletal, menacing creature through an abstract, otherworldly landscape. The mood was primitive and apocalyptic, with futuristic undertones, so I wanted a typeface that was part ancient, part sci-fi: runic letterforms, familiar yet alien. ILL is the abbreviation Sonny uses for Skrillex, hence ILL-TYP. From the logotype, I developed a full alphabet, Pla Phu, a reduction of the label's name. Its forms are round-edged and industrial, each letter fragmented by cut-out sections. Dark, gritty cyberpunk, drawn from 90s rave culture and classic science fiction.
